The elders, who unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the Governor Seriake Dickson and urged him to re-contest for a second term, berated the defectors, describing them as fair weather politicians.
The made the statement after a meeting with the governor in Yenagoa, the state capital on Sunday.
On his part, Governor Dickson decried the spate defections from the PDP to the APC in the state, describing such defectors as ingrates, who do not mean well for the state and the Ijaw nation.
He said most of the defectors were beneficiaries of former president Goodluck Jonathan’s generosity, but abandoned him as soon as he lost the presidential election.
According to him, this was the time when such persons should reciprocate the former president’s goodwill towards them, instead of turning their backs against him and the PDP.
“These persons are clearly not for us; they are enemies of the Ijaw nation and it is sad that, people who have benefitted immensely from the PDP and Jonathan could within so short a time jump ship.
And, yet they come and deceive us that, they love us. These are not persons to be taken serious and we must not fall prey to their antics.”
Governor Dickson also used the opportunity to call on the security agencies in the state to step up their game, adding that in spite of the prevailing peace and stability, they should not rest on their oars.
Governor Dickson decried the unwarranted attacks on his government, disclosing that, in spite of the distractions, the administration had continued to promote freedom of speech and expression.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Elders Forum, Chief Francis Doukpola, said the interaction would foster more understanding and cooperation among stakeholders, while urging traditional rulers to be sensitive to security issues in their domains by closely monitoring the activities of their subjects.
